Oleksandr Galeta, designer of the Tiger Edition toothbrushes: “I wanted to bring an idea that will be remembered by buyers and evoke emotions.”

What was your path to becoming a designer?

Since childhood, I’ve loved to draw. I used to look through books with illustrations and reproductions of famous artists’ work, and copy them. My parents encouraged me to draw, and later I went to art school. At school I really became interested in art and began to take part in various competitions. It was, and remains, very exciting for me to feel the spirit of competition and learn something new from other participants.

What projects do you usually work on? And what do you enjoy the most?

I’ve tried working in different areas of design. Initially it was interior design, and later product design. Now I mostly work on graphic design and logos. But I’m always interested in trying something new – like animation for example.

What inspires you?

I’m interested in working with designers from other countries. Platforms for co-creation, like Jovoto, give me that opportunity. I think it’s great. I can always learn something new, see new interesting styles or make new friends. On Jovoto I also discovered the Curaprox design challenge, and it was a really exciting competition.

Curaprox Design Challenge on Jovoto

At the beginning of 2021, Curaprox launched a design challenge on the Jovoto platform to encourage designers from all around the world to upload their design proposals for a double pack of Curaprox CS 5460 toothbrushes. More than 1,400 different design proposals were registered. Based on the voting from within the Jovoto community, as well as public voting on the Curaprox website, the six best designs have been chosen. Special editions of toothbrushes with these selected designs will be produced and sold around the world. For the designers, this is an opportunity to see their own designs on store shelves and in bathrooms around the world, and also to be showcased by both Curaprox and Jovoto. The winning designs will be launched, and their designers will be presented on Curaprox’s media platforms, in 2021 and 2022.

Your Tiger Special Edition was one of the winners of Curaprox’s design challenge. What’s the idea behind your toothbrushes? What did you want to express?

A lot of incredibly interesting works were submitted. I tried to create something really original, not only as a graphic design, but also as an interesting idea that will be remembered by buyers and evoke emotions. Looking at the different associations, I wanted to show the quality of the product and I think that an animal like the tiger represents it well.

The tiger gives the impression of reliability and strength. I also tried to paint an illustration of a tiger with its strong and healthy teeth. And it’s something I think it interesting and fun for both adults and children.

How did you choose the colours?

It was easy for me to choose the colours. I had a base; a character with colours already defined by nature. I just added brightness and more contrast. The pattern on the bristles of the toothbrush resembles a tiger’s stripes, and the colours go well together. Everything is done in a single colour scheme, and forms a common composition.

What was the biggest challenge of this design?

I often take part in competitions, and every time it is a new challenge for me. Perhaps the biggest challenge is to find something really new, an original solution to the problem or brief.

How would you like people to think about your toothbrushes?

I would like my toothbrush design to evoke positive emotions and impressions. To make the design memorable and understandable for everyone. However, it must be something original that distinguishes it from others.

Did you know of Curaprox before the collaboration?

Actually no, I didn’t know about Curaprox before. And I was really impressed by the variety of products and interesting design solutions from this company. I hope in the future there will be more new interesting competitions from Curaprox.

Is there a dream product that you would like to collaborate on?

I am interested in working on various projects. I hope in the future I will have the opportunity to work on similar interesting projects, and maybe also be lucky enough to do something more for Curaprox.
