Periodontic – orthodontic interrelationship

Dóra Tihanyi

Course overview

Safe orthodontic journey through the eyes of periodontists, Part 2

Periodontic-orthodontic interrelationship has been subject to a lot of investigation until today and it is a still controversial issue. It is well known that patients undergoing orthodontic treatment  with fixed appliances are at risk of developing gingival inflammation because of the increased challenge to oral hygiene. Orthodontic force application induces local inflammation (named orthodontitis) due to necrosis in the periodontal ligament (PDL). The combination of these two phenomena promotes unnecessary complications in the treatment. Additionally, periodontal disease (in patient's history) means an even higher risk.
