Stress, Inflammation & the Nervous System: Expanding Our Approach to Periodontal Care

Jovita Lawrence D'souza

Course overview

Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition influenced not only by microbial challenge, but also by host response and systemic regulatory mechanisms. Growing evidence suggests that chronic stress may act as a modifier of immune function, inflammatory burden, and periodontal stability.

As modern lifestyles increasingly expose patients to sustained psychological stress, dental professionals are encountering clinical patterns such as delayed healing, inflammatory instability and fluctuating treatment response. Understanding the biological and behavioral links between stress physiology, autonomic nervous system activity, and periodontal inflammation can enhance preventive and supportive care.

Participants will explore simple, evidence-informed strategies that can be incorporated into patient education to support autonomic balance, reduce inflammatory burden, and strengthen preventive outcomes.

By broadening the lens of periodontal prevention to include stress physiology and nervous system regulation, this session encourages a more comprehensive and biologically informed approach to patient care.
