House of Mouth: 90% Bacteria and 10% Human: Oral Microbiome Matters

Elizabeth Van der Ham

Course overview

Microbiome is far more than a collection of bacteria; it is a complex ecosystem essential to both oral and overall health. This webinar explores the latest evidence on the oral microbiome, the importance of maintaining microbial balance, and practical, evidence-based strategies that dental professionals can apply to support long-term oral and systemic health through microbiome-centered care.

The oral microbiome is one of the most diverse and dynamic microbial ecosystems in the human body, playing a vital role in maintaining oral and systemic health. Advances in microbiome research have transformed our understanding of oral health, shifting the focus from eliminating bacteria to preserving a balanced microbial ecosystem that supports health and prevents disease.

This course explores the latest evidence on the composition, function, and clinical significance of the oral microbiome. Participants will examine the complex interactions between the host, oral biofilm, saliva, and environmental influences that contribute to microbial homeostasis (eubiosis) or imbalance (dysbiosis). The course highlights how common factors such as oral hygiene practices, dietary habits, medications, smoking, systemic health, and oral healthcare products can influence the microbial environment and impact disease risk.

Current scientific evidence linking oral dysbiosis to dental caries, periodontal diseases, peri-implant diseases, and oral candidiasis will be discussed, together with emerging research demonstrating associations between the oral microbiome and systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, adverse pregnancy outcomes, respiratory disease, and neurodegenerative disorders. Participants will also be introduced to the concept of the oral–gut axis and the growing recognition of the oral microbiome's influence beyond the oral cavity.

A strong clinical emphasis will be placed on evidence-based, minimally disruptive approaches to biofilm management that preserve the beneficial oral microbiota while effectively preventing disease. Practical guidance will be provided on patient-centered preventive care, risk assessment, behavior change strategies, and the appropriate selection of oral healthcare products that support a healthy oral ecosystem rather than unnecessarily disrupting it.

By the end of this course, participants will have a deeper understanding of microbiome-centered preventive dentistry and will be equipped with practical, scientifically grounded strategies to incorporate into everyday clinical practice. The knowledge gained will enable oral healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes through preventive care that supports the long-term health and resilience of the oral microbiome.

This course is intended for dentists, oral hygienists, dental therapists, dental assistants, and other oral healthcare professionals who wish to strengthen their understanding of the oral microbiome and apply contemporary, evidence-based principles of preventive dentistry in clinical practice.
