Continuum of Care: Oral Health Matters Across the Lifespan

Bennete Fernandes

Course overview

Session 1: Biofilm Control: Creating Inspiring Routines for Daily Oral Care Session 2: Demystifying Minimally Invasive Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy

Session 1
Focuses on the biological mechanisms of dental biofilm and host response. Participants will learn to evaluate patient-specific factors—such as interdental anatomy, dexterity, risk profiles, and behavioral drivers—to design tailored, sustainable daily oral hygiene routines (including the iTOP method) using both manual and powered modalities.

Session 2
Explores the rationale and practical application of subgingival biofilm disruption. Participants will gain the clinical insights needed to assess site appropriateness, master targeted instrumentation techniques, evaluate adjunctive therapies, and formulate individualized MINST treatment strategies that promote pocket closure and inflammation reduction.

Learning Objectives

check
Explain
The role of dental biofilm, microbial ecology, and host response in the initiation and progression of gingival inflammation and periodontal disease, as well as the biological rationale and clinical principles behind minimally invasive non-surgical periodontal therapy (MINST) and subgingival biofilm disruption.
check
Apply
Evidence-based principles of biofilm control to select appropriate oral hygiene tools the iTOP way for individual patients, while applying minimally invasive instrumentation principles to select appropriate instruments, techniques, and treatment approaches for different periodontal sites in routine practice.
check
Analyze
Patient, site, and behavior-related factors—including interdental anatomy, dexterity, risk profile, and adherence—that influence daily plaque-control effectiveness, alongside analyzing periodontal sites to identify when MINST is appropriate versus when it is not.
check
Evaluate
The evidence for manual and powered toothbrushes, interdental cleaning devices, and adjuncts, as well as the current evidence comparing minimally invasive instrumentation, conventional subgingival instrumentation, and adjunctive therapies in achieving periodontal pocket closure and reducing inflammation.
check
Create
Individualized, practical, and sustainable biofilm-control routines that integrate clinical evidence, patient preferences, behavioural principles, and ongoing reassessment.
check
Develop
An individualized, minimally invasive periodontal treatment strategy that integrates clinical findings, patient factors, instrumentation principles, and appropriate supportive periodontal care.
